Take the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway east from Portland for about an hour and you’ll arrive at this warm and cozy Rhododendron vacation cabin in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Right near The Courses (Oregon’s first golf resort) in Welches and the Zigzag River, this cabin is also within 20 minutes of Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Hood Skibowl, and Timberline Lodge for the best skiing Oregon has to offer. Best of all, year-round you’ll have your own private hot tub for relaxing and soaking under the stars.
Perfect for a ski getaway with friends or family, as well as a weekend full of golfing and hiking, this fully equipped cabin boasts gleaming hardwood floors, a brand new kitchen, and updated bathrooms. Step inside and you be surrounded in warm colors and a shabby-chic aesthetic. Relax on the overstuffed sofa or one of the easy chairs for an evening in front of a roaring fire. The gas fireplace is a focal point for this room, but don’t worry — there’s also a wall-mounted flat-screen TV with cable to vie for your attention.
To the side of the living room, there’s a small bistro table – perfect for a game of cards or setting up your laptop to use the WiFi and check email. And out the back door and just off the deck, the hot tub is waiting for you after a long day on the ski slopes or hiking trails. On the deck, you’ll also have use of a gas grill – just pick up some chicken thighs, rosemary, garlic, and olive oil from the local grocery store, and come back to your cabin for an outdoor feast. Afterwards, roast marshmallows and make s’mores at the outdoor fire pit.
The open dining room includes a gorgeous old-growth wood table and handmade wood benches. Here you can set a beautiful table – whether it’s for a special occasion meal, or just a breakfast of blueberry pancakes and bacon.
The light and bright kitchen is well-stocked with major appliances like a dishwasher, stovetop/oven, refrigerator, and microwave, as well as gadgets like a coffee maker, tea kettle, blender, and slow cooker. Wake up to slow cooked steel cut oats in the morning or make a batch of hearty black bean and cumin soup during the day.
Upstairs, you’ll find all of the bedrooms – a bedroom with a queen bed, a loft area with twin-over-full bunk beds, and the master suite. The queen room is nice and cozy with its own TV, while the bunk room includes another flat screen TV – perfect for keeping the kids entertained while the adults sleep in.
The beautiful master suite has tall, wood-paneled ceilings, comfortable bedding, carpeted floors, and a trendy chevron-patterned headboard. There’s an in-room sink and shower for extra convenience, as well as a private water closet with toilet. This home will comfortably sleep seven guests, as well as your furry dog friends (though a nightly fee per dog and a minimum fee per stay will apply). Other amenities include a washer and dryer for guest use.
Nestled in a small mountain community, this cabin is halfway between Welches and Rhododendron. Right nearby, there’s hiking along Mirror Lake, boating, rafting, rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing and more. And of course there’s lots of golf to be played around Welches. The Courses is the Resort at The Mountain’s 27-hole golf course – located right between the Salmon River and Mt. Hood National Forest.
When you get hungry, the area’s menu is surprisingly diverse. In Rhododendron you can hit the Skyway Bar & Grill for live music, BBQ tofu, ribs, or brisket, or visit the Rendezvous in Welches for cider-poached salmon and wine tasting. There’s also ice cream, pizza, and even schnitzel all nearby. You can even watch them roast a fresh batch of beans at Mt. Hood Coffee Roasters!
In winter, it’s a quick drive to Mt. Hood Meadows, Timberline Lodge, or Mt. Hood Skibowl. Spend the day skiing or snowboarding, stop for an apres ski treat (maybe a Paul Bunyan pizza and a Multorporter at Timberline’s Blue Ox Bar), then head back to your cozy cabin for a soak in the hot tub or some hot cocoa in front of the fireplace. Aside from the downhill adventures, the area also has plenty of cross-country and snowshoeing trails in the forest lands to explore.
This cute and tidy Rhododendron vacation rental makes a great Mt. Hood home base whether it’s fall, winter, spring, or summer. Relax surrounded by warm design touches, handmade furniture, and the Mt. Hood National Forest for an Oregon mountain getaway you won’t soon forget.
